The IS-95 standard, also known as cdmaOne, is a second-generation digital cellular technology that was widely used in the UK market during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was developed by Qualcomm and provided significant improvements in call quality, capacity, and data transmission speeds compared to the previous analog systems.

IS-95 utilized Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology to allow multiple users to share the same frequency band simultaneously. This resulted in more efficient use of the available spectrum and increased the overall capacity of the cellular network. IS-95 also introduced features such as soft handoff, which improved call reliability and quality by allowing mobile devices to connect to multiple base stations simultaneously.

In the UK market, IS-95 was deployed by several mobile operators, including Orange and Vodafone, to provide voice and data services to their customers. However, as newer technologies like 3G and 4G were introduced, IS-95 gradually became obsolete and was eventually phased out in favor of these more advanced systems.

Today, IS-95 is no longer in use in the UK telecom market, but it played a significant role in the evolution of cellular technology and paved the way for the development of future generations of mobile networks.
