Duration: 1 Day
Description
This one-day course explores how the 5G Core Service Based Architecture (SBA) is deployed and operated in cloud-native environments. It examines the roles of the main network functions, service-based interfaces and service discovery, alongside the microservices and scaling principles that support Cloud Native Network Functions (CNFs).
Participants examine CNF packaging, configuration management, orchestration and deployment workflows, including observability, workload placement and resilience. The course also considers migration from non-standalone to standalone 5G, interworking with existing 4G networks and coexistence across hybrid deployments.
Key registration, authentication and session establishment procedures connect the architecture to network operation and troubleshooting. The course concludes with the security and exposure frameworks used to protect service interactions and provide controlled access to network capabilities.
Course Modules
- Fundamentals of 5G Service Based Architecture (SBA)
- Deploying Cloud Native Network Functions (CNFs)
- SBA Interworking, Migration & Coexistence
- 5GC Signalling, Protocols & Key Procedures
- SBA Security, Policy & Exposure Frameworks
Prerequisites
Participants should have a working understanding of mobile network architecture, including the main functions of the 4G and 5G core, together with basic IP networking knowledge. Familiarity with cloud computing, containers and Kubernetes fundamentals is recommended. Prior experience of deploying CNFs or developing software is not required.
Who the Course Is For
This course is intended for mobile core engineers, cloud and infrastructure engineers, technical architects, integration specialists, and operations or support professionals involved in deploying or maintaining cloud-native 5G Core networks. It is particularly relevant to those supporting the transition from 4G or non-standalone 5G to standalone 5G, and those who need to connect their knowledge of mobile core functions with cloud-native deployment and operational practices.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe key 5G Core functions within the Service Based Architecture (SBA).
- Explain service-based interfaces and the NRF's role in service discovery.
- Describe how cloud-native principles support scalable network functions.
- Explain the use of Helm, Operators and CRDs in CNF deployment.
- Outline CNF deployment, lifecycle management, GitOps and CI/CD workflows.
- Identify observability, resilience and workload placement considerations.
- Describe migration and coexistence options for 4G EPC, IMS and 5G Core.
- Explain network function interactions for registration, authentication and PDU session setup.
- Identify basic troubleshooting steps for SBI and NRF-related issues.
- Explain how mTLS, certificates and OAuth2 secure service-based communications.
- Describe the roles of NEF and CAPIF in exposing network capabilities securely.
