Address Resolution

Address resolution is a crucial aspect of networking that allows devices to communicate with each other on a network. In simple terms, address resolution is the process of mapping a network layer address to a data link layer address. This is necessary because devices on a network communicate using different types of addresses at different layers of the OSI model.

At the network layer, devices are identified using IP addresses, which are unique numerical labels assigned to each device on a network. On the other hand, at the data link layer, devices are identified using MAC addresses, which are unique identifiers assigned to the network interface card of a device. In order for devices to communicate with each other, the network layer address (IP address) needs to be resolved to the data link layer address (MAC address).

There are two main methods of address resolution: Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) and Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP). ARP is used in IPv4 networks to map IP addresses to MAC addresses, while NDP is used in IPv6 networks for the same purpose. Both protocols work in a similar way, by broadcasting a request for the MAC address of a specific IP address and receiving a response from the device that owns that IP address.

Address resolution is an important process in networking because it allows devices to communicate with each other efficiently and effectively. Without address resolution, devices would not be able to send data packets to the correct destination, leading to communication failures and network congestion.
