5G, Recorded Webinar -

Introduction to 5G in Africa (6th June 2022)

5G Private Networks

5G brings more flexibility and efficiency through an enhanced and flexible New Radio interface, and by embracing virtualisation, cloud concepts, edge computing, network “slicing”, and greater integration with non-3GPP technologies (as well as 4G). It builds on the latest 4G techniques in terms of both radio and network infrastructure – with significant improvements in latency, throughput and low energy IoT requirements.

To achieve the performance and operating objectives, 5G incorporates many changes (compared to 4G), and 5G/4G interworking is defined across a number of flexible connection scenarios. This tech talk illustrates the 5G system end-to-end, highlighting the New Radio and key architectural principles (including the impact of virtualisation), as well as the different connection scenarios and interworking options to be supported.

We consider the impact of 5G in Africa and discuss some of the major aspects of 5G deployment that are specific to the continent, or a key focus.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • 5G Progress – Africa Perspective
  • Architecture Principles and Evolution
  • 5G New Radio Interface
  • NG-RAN Deployment
  • 5G Core and Virtualisation
  • Slicing and Connection Scenarios
  • Cost Considerations
